About the Chroma Room

Chroma is the Greek word for ‘colour’. The Chroma room is the main art room in the nursery, emphasising the importance we place upon the visual expressions of children and ‘The hundred Languages’. Children express their ideas in many ways, art offers children the opportunity for sensory exploration – young children learn through their senses. When children explore and experiment with a range of objects and materials, they are building their knowledge of the world around them. We place art as a form of creativity at the centre of our work with children.

In the Chroma room children are given the opportunity to explore and experiment with a range of materials including paint, crayons, clay, felt-making and model-making to name but a few. The children are introduced to a regular supply of new materials and have plenty of time to explore, experiment and to practice with them and to develop their ideas.

Resources are made available to the children throughout the day.

Art is important:

• Children can express their feelings and emotions through the range of opportunities available to them.
• Children can develop their self-confidence and in turn this can lead to positive self-esteem.
• Children can develop their skills.
• Children can be introduced to works of art done by other children, they can present their own and they can be inspired by the works of other artists.
• Children can be encouraged to take an active interest in the many cultural opportunities available to them locally and further afield.
• There is no right or wrong answer, it is all about the child’s interpretation of her world.
